January 2016 Lions Roar
The Lions Club of Cobourg ended 2015 and started 2016 with an amazing New Years Eve party held at the Lions Centre, this fund raising event was well attended and the funds raised have already been put into good use. We were approached by two individuals looking for assistance and we were more then happy to help out.
We are already planning the 2016 New Years Eve event...2017 is a special year for Canada as well as Lions International, as you know Canada will be celebrating its 150th Birthday in 2017 and the Lions will be celebrating it's 100th year of serving communities around the world. We will be planning a special New Years Eve party to help kick off both of these special anniversaries so mark your calendars to attend the Lions Club of Cobourg New Years Eve party.
Not only do we help out individuals but also groups and organizations. We donated to the Golden Plough Lodge so they could purchase a new flat screen TV for their Symonds Cottage lounge.
We contributed to "The Help Centre" which is a United Way agency, so that they could help out a client who was about to fall homeless, and because of our donation she was able to have a little more stability in their life.
We also contributed to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation "Light up a Life" campaign. The funds raised during this campaign will fund six new fetal monitors for the hospital. We also donated an auction item for the hospitals Gala Night held at the Lions Centre as well as volunteering our time to bar tend the event, from all indications it was a very successful event.
Our club donated funds to the local Ontario Community Emergency Assistance (OCEAP), the funds donated will be used to buy special equipment for the group which works with the local Municipal emergency services. OCEAP volunteers provide assistance for ground search and rescue, disasters or at large scale events, this year represents their 10th anniversary and we are proud to have them as partners during the Cobourg Waterfront Festival.
We recently completed our annual Vision Screening program of all JK and SK students in the Cobourg area...at last count we screened over 300 children. Any child that is deemed to need further testing is referred to a local optometrist or ophthalmologist.
The Lions Club of Cobourg continues to grow with new members all the time, we currently have 3 very interested people attending meetings and we most recently inducted our newest member Karen Kileeg to the club.
If you are interested in joining the Lions and would like more information on what we do, please feel free to join us at one of our dinner meetings which are held the first and third Thursday's of the month at the Lions Centre on Elgin St...tell them George sent you and dinner will be on us. Even if you don't mention my name dinner will still be on us, meetings start at 7:00, hope to see you there.
Watch for my special Leap Year Lions Roar next month where I'll give you tips on what to do with that extra day.
Until next time.
