Well wasn't that a summer for record heat, at last count we had over 40 days of 30 plus degrees, air conditioners were humming and BBQ's were well used.
The Lions summer officially kicked off with the Cobourg Waterfront Festival over the Canada Day long weekend.
As you may (or may not ) know this is our major fund raiser for the year. In the past few years we have charged a $3 admission fee to help offset costs and thereby allowing us to give more funds back to the community. There was much backlash and negative feedback to us charging the $3 so we dropped this fee and looked at other ways to collect monies for charities and organizations in Northumberland.
We had a Strawberry Social with all profits going to the United Way, we had a Craft Beer Night, we raffled off a trip Voucher (worth $2000) again all funds going back to the community, however even with all the hard work and efforts put in by the Lions Club of Cobourg we still came up short on our fund raising goals and unfortunately so will some of the groups we have supported in the past.
We have supported not only the United Way and Northumberland Hills Hospital but also groups such as Food Share, The Local Army Cadets, Transition House, Cornerstone, Golden Plough Lodge, Cobourg Museum Foundation and many of the local sports organizations.
Having said all this we are looking at more (and new ways) to raise funds for our many causes. One such way is by having "Hotel California" perform at the Lions Centre on February 18th 2017, details are still being worked on so watch this space for further information as it become available. We are also working on a Halloween Dance which will be at the Lions Centre on October 29th, please check the Lions Centre Website for details.
We have been helping out many groups with our BBQing expertise this past month, we were onsite for the Northumberland Bike Up BBQing burgers and Hot dogs for the many riders who participated in this event, we BBQd at the 30th anniversary of Northumberland Food Share and this past weekend we were in full force at the United Ways Dragon Boat Races down at the harbour.
I'd like to take this time to send out a big thank you to one of our "oldest" members both in time as a Lion as well as in age. As part of the Lions International Foundation, the Lions collect and distribute eyewear to third world countries through the Sight First program. You may have seen the distinct Boxes throughout the community in banks, credit unions, retail and optical stores. The foundation internationally has collected thousands of glasses world wide and Lion Harold Coward has been a big part of this process. Harold has been our coordinator for the past 21 years collecting boxes of glasses on a monthly basis, packaging them up and sending them out for further processing and distribution. I would personally like to thank Harold for his support in this worth while cause.
On a more somber note I would like to acknowledge the passing of two of our members this past summer Mr. BIll Scott and Mr. Larry Latta, both members exemplified Lionism in the work they did not only for the Lions but also for the community.
The Lions Club of Cobourg is always looking for new members with new ideas, we are more then just the waterfront festival and expert Barbecuers, we are part of the community and looking for like minded individuals (male and female).
If you are interested in learning more about the Lions please join us for dinner on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at the Lions Centre, our meetings start at 7:00 ... and dinners on me.
Take care and hope to see you around the community at one of our events.
